Shy Ronnie, Speak UP!

Rihanna recently appeared on SNL and actually performed in a skit. The Shy Ronnie skit was pretty cute and played on the idea of her being an experienced singer of hooks. Take a look, lovelies.

Who's Hot

I know, I know. She's been featured before, but she absolutely murdered this look in this silver, Roland Mouret mermaid dress. Zoe Saldana attended the premiere of the highly anticipated film, Avatar. The Dominican stunner plays Neytiri in the James Cameron film, in theaters December 18th.

Sorry... no fella this time around!

Gotta Love Cudi

Lovelies, you all know I have an affinity for the young Scott Mescudi! To my delight the video for his latest single, Pursuit of Happiness, was recently released. It was directed by an unlikely character, Josh Hartnett and has this dope slow-mo effect, while he remains in real time. Everyone knows things cooler in slow motion [ lol ]. Well enjoy it!

J'adore Him

The holiday season is soon upon us and if you haven't done your shopping already, here's a couple of cool conceptual gifts for the men you adore. I ALWAYS have trouble shopping for guys, but if all the coolest guys in the world lived in my head this is what they'd get. [ lol ]

THE GROOMER
I'm sure every masculine manscaper would appreciate an authentic shave kit. I think of one of my only male cousins who appreciates an excellent haircut and well kept facial hair. This kit is from the high end company, The Art of Shaving, $150. It includes a Gillette Fusion Chrome Collection razor with pre-shave oil, shaving cream, a badger brush and after shave balm.

THE GADGET JUNKIE
Got that good guy friend who's all gadgets, but wears glasses that look like they're from the 60s? He's modern and retro all rolled in one. Personally, you couldn't go wrong with a Retro Duo SNES Console. I mean it plays all old school Nintendo SNES and NES games! I even want this, but that's just me. The console runs for about $50 at Think Geek.

Another gadget that caught my eye is for the music lover/iPod enthusiast. This is specially for someone like my significant other, who dabbles in the art of DJing. I think the iDJ iPod 2 Channel Mixer by Numark is definitely something out of the box and thoughtful. The mixer is about $160 on Amazon.

THE SHOPPER
I don't think there's ever been an age where I've been so self-conscious when it comes to buying clothing and accesories for a man. Highly fashion conscious and in the pursuit of personal style, men have become especially difficult to buy clothes for. Dad being the only exception; he always appreciates a fine tie. But this holiday season a stylish cardigan goes a long way. The grey collegiate sweater from AE is about $50. The Buffalo Plaid Sweater from the Gap, also comes in a great red color for $80.

I also think that every dapper fellow needs a pair of great cuff links. Just make sure he has the proper shirts pre-purchase. I've learned that lesson the hard way. Hmmph! David Donahue makes an array of cool cuff links that you can find at Nordstrom's and this pair of knot links are $125.

THE FOODIE
This set is for the Food Network junkies that like to experiment in the kitchen and eat really great food. And nothing could please a foodie more than premium cookware. Get your favorite guy his Iron Chef starter kit [ lol ] from Cookware.com. Calphalon's Simply Stainless II 10 pc. set, $200, will not only make him smile, but get lots of use in dinners being made for you.

And if all else fails, lovelies, can't go wrong with a gift card!

World AIDS Day

Today, I encourage all you lovelies to spread the awareness, get educated/educate each other, know your status and continue doing your part after December 1st. I was once told when it comes to certain things the numbers are twice as much for the Black Community [i.e. unemployment]. HIV/AIDS is something that is an epidemic especially within our community. So, if I leave you with nothing else, be positive that you're negative!

Here's a couple places where you can find information:

Rated B-, Sorry Stans

Most of you lovelies know I don't like to make judgements without seeing, hearing and experiencing for myself. And with all the hoopla surrounding Rihanna's latest addition to her discography, I had to sit down and listen to it from beginning to end.

Rihanna's PR people and Def Jam have been trying their darnedest to push this Rated R album; giving it away with pizza, selling it for $0.99 on Amazon. I mean they are literally giving this thing away. Yet, I seen tweets and other reviews saying how great the album is. Guess it was just really bad projections.

Now, I don't want to get jumped by any Rihanna stans out there. This is just my one little opinion and overall I like her manufactured style and most of her music. So, just take this with a grain of salt.

I will admit she has been taking a couple vocal lessons and just recording tracks that really suit her voice, which I'm really happy about. My favorites are definitely Stupid in Love, Russian Roulette and Photographs. In between like street & blah avenue are Cold Case Love[could be a fave on a good day], G4L, Hard and just making it is The Last Song. There's some really great writing on this album. Most tracks are really settled into the anti-love/revenge theme, which I definitely dig.

On to the least favorites/I could care less abouts/Why is this on the album; Hole in My Head, Rude Boy and Wait Your Turn. I don't really know how I feel about these tracks, but I'm sure the fans are enjoying it. Well, that's all lovelies!

Precious

All the hype was absolutely worth it. The Lee Daniels film Precious is a story beautifully composed exposing a reality; young, unloved and abused living in NYC during the late 80s. Completely compelling.

This movie is humorous, heart wrenching and frank. I never read the book Push, which the film is based on, so this only tells me the book is ten times better. Gabourey Sidibe portrays this broken spirit that finally breaks through in such a triumphant way. You can't help but root for Precious. But besides the main character you get a glimpse into the lives of many of the supporting characters and begin to understand why people are the way they are.

Mo'nique does such a flawless job in playing a heartbroken mother that   lets her anguish turn into hate for her own child. I hated her, pitied her and understood her all at the same time. The woman is so complex, suffering from a lot of deep emotional hang ups. And there's already Oscar buzz! I respected her as an actress in this role because she had to have pull the character from such a deep place. I believed her!!

Grab a friend, a loved one and go see Precious. You will leave theater hopeful, grateful and with a joke or two. I'd definitely see it again. Could be this generations The Color Purple and I do not say that lightly. Take a glance at the trailer, lovelies!

So, I Chopped All My Hair Off. Now, What?

Hey lovelies. I want to apologize to you all. I was going to give up on writing this blog and I thought about writing again and again and finally got the gall to continue. J'adore Miss.Emme will be continuing. No more major hiatuses! Promise!

So, back to the story!! As you know I've been transitioning on this quest to natural hair. Anyone who knows me also knows that I'm a little bit of a control freak and a bit on the impatient side [hey! everyone has their flaws, right?].

With this desperation to be free of permed ends, I strolled into my bathroom and commenced in cutting off my own hair. I made the first few snips and thought "what the hell am I doing!?!?" Yet, I couldn't stop and the further I got I realized there was no turning back.

When I was done I was scared, I was shocked at myself and I honestly thought I made a huge mistake. I kept a hat on for a few days only sent pictures and warnings to certain people lol. But I slowly and surely grew to love it more and more.

It's healthy, strong, soft and really cute. Oh, I can't forget well taken care of. Plus, I can wear a lot more cool hair accessories. I'm proud to be natural and loving my big chop more and more everyday!

Live for It!

All you lovelies who grew up in the '90s remember Auntie Whit as the QUEEN of R&B crossover. You just wanted to dance with somebody and find endless love. And when she married Bobby, you thought it's not right, but it's okay! She was our queen of the night, our preacher's wife and we all waited for her to exhale. She finally did.

The diva herself, Whitney Houston, has risen from the ashes [no pun intended] and is finally making her highly anticipated comeback. If you've seen the Oprah interview, you can sense the change in her energy and I love it. I Look to You was released just in time to be considered for the Grammys and the official first single "Million Dollar Bill" finally has a video. I LIVE for this Swizz Beatz produced, A.Keys written track. And she looks great!

Who's Hot

Let's get right into it, lovelies!!

The Queen of Hip Hop Soul is just doing the most right now! Mary J. Blige is starring in the newest Tyler Perry film, I Can Do Bad All By Myself. I was going to give it to Taraji, but then I remembered Mary's gorgeous Essence cover for the October issue. Here she is at the movies premiere donning all white with her ever-glowing skin.

He's featured on The Blueprint 3 and has his own album, Man on the Moon, dropping on September 15th. Scott Mescudi, known to us as Kid Cudi is doing his promotional thing headed to the Late Show taping. I love his I-stay-up-all-night, but-I'm-good look and he's a Twitterhead, so you gotta love him. Added an extra flick just because I think it's cute. : ]

Random Celeb Junk

Hey lovelies, here's a random purging of stuff I've heard, seen and read in that last couple days.

A queen of lace fronts, only second to Beyonce, has finally revealed to her audience what her real hair looks like. That's right, after all that unnecessary anticipation, Auntie Tyra showed us all that she's got a head full of hair. I know I am not alone when I say I was waiting for about ear length hair that probably wouldn't make it into to ponytail [kinda like Eve]. Next!

Maia Campbell's crazy, crackhead/schizo video was all over the net and everyone was like, "DAMN!! She was effin them ketchup chips up!!" Another pretty, quasi-talented Black woman gone to waste. She's already been in treatment before and she continues to use drugs knowing of her reactions with her bipolar disorder/depression. I'll pray for her along with the rest of the crackheads roaming around Baltimore. [here's the video] Jesus, take the wheel!

LaLa Vasquez dropped her website.. for what? Next!

Speaking of LaLa, her brother Ludacris was getting his philanthropy on and gave away 20 cars to unfortunate families. That's a wonderful gesture, but a friend infiltrated my mind with the thought, "If they're unfortunate, how are they going to maintain these cars? Who's paying the insurance? And what about gas?" Who knows?

Nicole Ritchie gave birth to a baby boy named, Sparrow James Midnight Madden. Enough said...
And no, Lauren London has not dropped her baby gremlin, yet.

Another Black man placing his hands on a woman is so disappointing. Allegedly, football player Shawne Merriman choked the hell out his girlfriend, Tila Tequila. Smh, she's like 2 lbs soaking wet and he's going to jail. My face would've looked like this, too...

Well that's all, lovelies!!

So, They Were For Real

As you lovelies know, when Teddy Graham and Christina Milian got together I thought it was about as random and nutty as Nick Cannon and Mariah. But just like Nick and Mariah, these two were serious and supposedly had a quickie wedding in Vegas last Friday. The rumor mills are buzzing about C.Mili being pregnant with a mini-graham, too. Ugh, this is all too weird to me, they are so random!! Anywho, Nivea uber-pregnant self is probably regretting that she went back to that gremlin, only to be his 973,453,245th baby mother.

Can't Hear the Angels on This One

My boo and I were into Dirty Money's "Angels" upon hearing it. We even spent a minute imagining what the video would be like... Black and white shots, Diddy walking on the street in the rain. We were close, but no cigar. And when I found out that the illustrious Hype Williams would be directing alongside with Diddy's over-the-top visions, I thought I was in for a treat. Wrong! This video is so parched!! I mean I get it, but it's late as almighty. I swear I've seen it already. Anyway, you lovelies let me know how you feel about it. Take a glance.

It'll Make You Slap Yo Mama!

I was spending a quiet evening with my roommate and our apartment's frequenters and they were all enveloped in this joke that I had no clue about. So, they exposed me to the video I'm about to share with you lovelies. I laughed at first, then I thought, "not my mother" and then I thought, "wow, he's still alive." Well, with that said, enjoy!

"How does it feel? How does it feel to be told, 'Shut Up'?!?" Would've been bloody murder at my house!

Divas Love Tacos, Too

So, I'm reading Concrete Loop and there goes Great Auntie Di strutting with her Taco Bell and leopard print flats. I'll eternally love her crazy self and iDie for that wild mane of hers. I can just see her busting down some soft tacos with extra sour cream on the side, all regular-like. But that sweatshirt/cardigan, Jesus take the wheel!! But, if she likes it, I love it. Long live Ms. Ross.

The Student's Lament

Students from all over the nation can relate to administration issues, from financial aid delays to lack of housing and anything else you can name. HBCUs are not the only schools that struggle with these kind of concerns, TWIs do as well. However, the students of the famed HBCU, Howard University, were not going to take it anymore.

Word about a student protest had spread throughout the internet. My first encounter was on Twitter with Diddy asking for details about his alma mater. Then, I read J. Dakar's entry on Concrete Loop and an article on the Washington Post website.

About 350 students rallied in protest Friday morning at their administration building and even threatened a sit-in. I'm sure my fellow Morganites can relate to standing in long lines in any given office in Montebello or trekking to Truth Hall demanding to know what happened to your funds/schedule/housing after you've done everything that you were supposed to do. Everyone knows it gets as serious as keeping security at our financial aid office. Our complaints aren't all that different.

More power to the Howard Students and staff that had their voice heard last Friday.

Fergie + Shoes= The Business

I had been wondering about that shoe line that Fergie was talking about in that HP commercial. [remember that?] I had no clue that it was already out. Not impressed by some of the shoes, but this one really caught my eye. This funky, neutral conception retails for about $100. I dig it. Can you?

Who's Gonna Run This Town?

I have been a long time Jay-Z fan and a huge fan of the second single off of the upcoming Blueprint 3. The song, "Run This Town," is one of those love it or hate it tracks, anyone in between doesn't really care about music. And anyone who has a crew of people surrounding them that are planning, hard working, grinding or just good at what they do, can feel this song. It's all about a takeover, so what do you run?

Watching this video you can see how Jay-Z has evolved from "Big Pimpin" to the now. The concept is clear cut, the esthetic is dark, it's straight to the point and all about the uprising. Vive la revolution!! I mess with this video!

To Be or Not to Be?: Natural Hair Edition

While being green, eco-friendly and all about Mother Earth is becoming more and more widespread, I've decided to apply the concept of naturality to myself in another sense. Going natural is never an easy decision to make, simply because the process itself is a journey. And with my second attempt to embrace the curly goodness that I was born with, I've found inspiration in my family, friends and the good ole internets, lol.

One of my Leading Ladies/N-Sistas from Morgan has recently began documenting her journey and had being doing it with so much personality. Miss Donna Jenay herself [read her blog] has made transitioning about dating your hair. She's all about getting to know her hair, it's likes and dislikes and loving her hair. Girl, yes!
My Mom, sister and Auntie Marie all have locs and I've always appreciated their beautiful hair. My best friend, Diana, has also been transitioning [longer than I have], but is handling it in a different approach. I mostly wear my hair out and she, being the more clever, has found a home in the kinky twist protective style. But we're both learning how to take care of our God-given hair.
Every now and then I'll give an update on the progress of my hair, struggles, products and all that jazz lol. No more creamy crack!!

In spirit of all this hair talk, here's the trailer for Chris Rock's Good Hair. Enjoy!

Who's Hot

Hey lovelies and gents! Once again the difficult task of selecting this week's hot celebs falls upon little ole me.

Coming across this lady was fairly easy. One of my favorites, Solange appeared at an OP launch event [love the pink lip], being as she's featured in the fashion company's "Summer of Music." She also recently appeared at San Francisco's Pride wearing a metallic, rainbow catsuit, but you gotta love that girl.

If I could, I would make it Common, every week. I can, but I won't do that to you lovelies. Drumroll...... for the gentleman of the moment. The grown man sexy that is Idris Elba [aka DJ Big Dris the Londoner] landed on the cover of the August issue of Essence. The man is just fine and the accent doesn't bother me none, either.

He looks even better in the photos inside, but I digress!!

Mahiri's fashion based enterprise has grown so much that the company will soon have a commercial base in New York City. I'm insanely excited for my friend and I want you to help him celebrate!!

The MK Links Agency will be having an amazing launch party on Saturday, July 18th at Le Royale at 9pm. The event is hosted by VH1's Glam God winner Indashio and I'm sure you'll be suprised at the guess list. So, make your way there next Saturday, lovelies!

Baby Talk

Finally!! A couple of rumored celeb pregnancies were confirmed for us in the past week. I'm sure you lovelies had already heard that Jennifer Hudson had a baby shower a while back and was still denying her pregnancy. And you've barely seen her since. She made an appearance at Michael Jackson's memorial service this past Tuesday, looking ready to drop! And she sannnggg that Free Willy song!

Another mommy-to-be that came out from her hiding place was Lauren London. Rumor is she's pregnant with Weezy F's baby and apparently at the same time as on and off girlfriend Nivea. [She messed up when she left The-Dream]. But anywho, she made an appearance at Diddy's fourth of July white party.
Last, but definitely not least Raven Symone and ex Jussie Smollet [Jurnee Smollet's older brother] recently had a baby girl, named Lilianna Pearman in an Atlanta Hospital. I know right, lovelies! Who knew?!? Supposedly, this is the newborn baby girl. [photo removed]

EDIT: It appears that That's So Raven's camp is saying she did not have a baby nor was she ever pregnant. Supposedly, she's a new auntie. Still, who knows?

Well, that's more than enough baby talk for one day. Good luck to these young mothers!

Entertainment Rundown

Just some random Hollywood happenings and of course my input!

♠ I can go on and on about how trash the BET Awards were, but I barely have the energy. But I will say this!

-Jamie, the all purpose host, smh pick a job
-Performances were dry, with the exception of Soulja Boy, the entire Ojay's tribute and performance, Jay, Maxwell & Ne-Yo.
-Who let Ciara sing? She can dance, let her do that.
-I'm still curious as to what Beyonce was going to do prior to MJ's passing. DRY!
-Commericals were wild, everyone has a show. When am I getting mine?
-MJ tributes could've been way better, period!

♠ Next up, the dreaded Drake video. The highly anticipated "Best I Ever Had" video was finally released and I must say it's a love or hate situation. The storyline of the video was clever, but the correlation to the song was barely there. Kanye's cinematography was enjoyable, but there were more than enough breasts in that video. My opinion? Better luck next time, I'm sure I'll "thank him later." Take a look for yourself.

♠ No, I have not seen the Tiny & Toya show. I think I'm subconsciously boycotting that show. I've had more than enough BET intake as it is. It's time to gain my IQ points back.

♠ Usher is questioning the paternity of his younger son, Naviyd. Smh, not suprised.

Well, that's all for now lovelies. Au revoir!

An Icon Leaves Us

I am close to positive that all of you lovelies were just as shocked as I was when you heard word that the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, passed away. At the age of 50, the mega-star underwent cardic arrest at UCLA Hospital and was pronounced dead yesterday just before 3pm. He had just announced that he would be doing a comback tour entitled, This Is It.

Michael Jackson is the defintion of an icon. One of the only artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice, 13 Grammys, 13 #1 singles and cited in the Guinness Book of World Records as the "Most Successful Entertainer of All Time," the man just couldn't be touched. Performing and entertaining for nearly four decades, Michael Jackson has influenced the world with his artistry and philanthropy. You can see and hear his influence in artists like Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, The-Dream and Usher, just to name a few.

I was sitting in my living room with my mom when I heard the news and just as I was sitting there in shock, my phone rang. It wasn't my best friend or anyone from college or even a family member, but an old friend from high school. She was a huge MJ fan, just like I was and recalled the conversation we had about 6 years prior about being a part of the generation that would recall the time that Michael Jackson would die. We never thought that the passing day that our generation's Elvis would come so soon. It was surreal.

Michael Jackson was a huge portion of my music intake during my childhood. I remember begging for my mom to put on his records [yes, I said records] back to back and just dancing and singing for my parents. Not to mention the VHS tapes full of his videos and live concerts that I would never get tired of. And I wouldn't dare forget how sensitive he was as the Scarecrow in the Wiz. I could only imagine all the memories that are attached to all of the work he's accomplished in his time.

Though the King of Pop lived most of his life under the scrutiny of the public eye, I hope that he's finally resting up in music heaven with Ray Charles, Aaliyah and other industry greats. Michael Jackson will never be forgotten.
